Chamber Music at Bethany is back! After a 2 1/2 year hiatus, we’re beyond excited to give you our biggest season ever–four exhilarating concerts on October 23, January 29, March 5, and May 7:
Sunday Oct. 23, 2022 at 2pm: Half the Sky
“Half the Sky” refers to a Chinese proverb that translates to “women hold up half the sky.” But while women make up half the population, female composers are still chronically underrepresented in Classical music and face an enduring struggle to get their music performed or even to become a composer at all. This Chamber Music at Bethany concert features works by women who have overcome personal and professional battles to create works of lasting beauty. The program will feature soprano Emily Birsan and include works ranging from the seventeenth century composer Barbara Strozzi to contemporary composers Jessie Montgomery, Sheila Silver, and Chicago’s own Stacy Garrop and Patrice Michaels. Sunday January 29, 2023 at 2pm: Trio Diorama debut
The debut concert of Trio Diorama will feature piano trio selections old and new, featuring violinist MingHuan Xu and pianist Winston Choi, both performers on the world stage and professors at Roosevelt University, joining four-time Grammy winning cellist and CM@B Executive and Artistic Director Nick Photinos. Stay tuned for further program info. Purchase tickets here.
Sunday March 15, 2023 at 2pm: Two Black Churches
The concert features Chicago-based singer Keanon Kyles, praised by CNN for his “incredible bass-baritone voice,” in local composer Shawn Okpehbolo’s Two Black Churches, a musical reflection of two significant and tragic events perpetrated at the hands of white supremacists in two black churches, decades apart. The concert includes other works by Shawn and other African-American composers including Chicago-based Margaret Bonds and Florence Price. Purchase tickets here.
Sunday May 7, 2023 at 2pm: Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time
The seminal work of French composer Olivier Messiaen, Quartet for the End of Time was composed in 1941 while the composer was a German prisoner of war at Stalag-VIIA. The piece is one of mystery, strength, and transcendent beauty, and remains one of the most important works of chamber music ever composed. Performed this afternoon by violinist Ming-Huan Xu, cellist and co-Artistic Director Nick Photinos, pianist Winston Choi, and Chicago Symphony clarinetist John Bruce Yeh, this promises to be a spectacular event!
