This concert will feature works by the Grammy Award nominee and Chicago based composer Shawn Okpebholo. The program will center around his “Two Black Churches,” a musical reflection of two tragic massacres in Birmingham in 1963 and in Charleston in 2015. Washington Post calls this work “absolutely devastating” and “beautiful.” Surrounding this powerful work will be works by other African American composers including Margaret Bonds, Nathalie Joachim, and Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson. Co-artistic directors Nick Photinos and Yasuko Oura will be joined by the talented bass-baritone Keanon Kyles.
